Meet the Directors Behind Your Dive Training! 

Fabio Buitrago: He started diving in 1984 at the age of 10 when his father, a scuba dive instructor, took him on a tour in a fresh water crater lake in Nicaragua. He felt in love with the underwater world and didnt stop diving ever since. As his experience and knowledge of the aquatic realm was growing he decided to step up his passion and studied a bachelor in ecology and later a master in Wildlife Management.

His work in ecology has taken him to become a TED speaker and to be considered a conservation leader in Centralamerica. He has been a entreprenuer and a scuba diving industry leader founding dive centers and applying his knowledge on bussiness management to the diving bussiness.

As an avid diver and ecology researcher he was often asked to teach people to dive. He started teaching scuba diving in 2004 and has been certifying divers in different levels and specialities in the Caribbean, in the Pacific Ocean and fresh water lakes around central america. In his instructor career Fabio has been awarded the ¨PADI Elite Instructor¨ for more than seven consecutive years. His experience will enhance your IDC and prepare you for more than just passing the Instructor Examination, he will make you knowledgeable, prepared, confident and a succesfull PADI Instructor.

As a Course Director, Fabio has received several times awards as a frequent trainer and excellence certificates given his teaching, coaching and management skills. He is also a very experienced instructor trainer in Technical Diving, Sidemount, Photography, and many specialities more. During your IDC/MSDT you will have the chance to be closely coached by a Fabio in small groups and enhance/develop you teaching and diving capabilities to a whole new level.

Phillip Hetherington is a PADI Course Director currently splitting his time between Sugar Land, Texas and Cozumel, Mexico. Originally from the Northwest of England, Phillip arrived in Texas in the early ‘80’s where he rapidly became involved in scuba diving and then followed his passion for the sport into teaching scuba diving.

Phillip has dived everything from the lakes of the UK and Texas, to pristine dive sites across the globe. When we asked him what his favourite dive  is, his response was, “they are all something unique that make them my favorite.” He is also a busy trip leader, taking groups to places such as Roatan, Cozumel, Fiji, Yap, Palau, Cuba, The Maldives and the Red Sea, just to name a few.

Phillip is also the Owner/Director of Training of Sugar Land Dive Center, a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center located in  Texas, and Dive Boutique Cozumel.  He also teaches PADI Instructor Courses in Texas and Mexico in addition to Roatan.

When asked why he loves his job as a PADI Course Director, Phillip answered that it gives him “the ability to work in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, allowing passionate individuals who love diving the ability to gain the tools required to successfully work in the field they love.”

Phillip is committed to coming to Roatan several times a year to teach both PADI Instructor Courses and assist with the Divemaster Intern program with Subway Watersports and Roatan Dive Academy.
